My Approach to Counseling:
Ever since the Garden of Eden, people have been caught in the struggle
between shame and grace. Adam and Eve’s transgression into the realm of sin
ushered humanity into the devastating effects of shame.
Shame is clearly portrayed in the Genesis account of the first couple sewing
fig leaves. Their goal? To hide. They hide from each other. They hide from
themselves. They hide from God.
This is the nature of shame. Shame’s message is, “You are not enough. You
are not acceptable. You are a defect. You must hide. It’s the only safe way
to survive.”
The fallout is evident. Conflict and brokenness emerge as a major component
in the story following the fall. Our experience is much the same as our
predecessors. Shame is deeply rooted in our lives. As we live out its story,
we suffer emotionally, psychologically, relationally and spiritually.
God’s answer is grace. Grace tells a different story. We are accepted. We
are worthy. We are valuable. We are wanted. Healing and reconciliation are
possible. Grace gives us hope for change and wholeness. It impacts us in
every way—emotionally, psychologically, relationally and spiritually.
I approach my work with my clients with the promise and hope of grace. I
strive to make our time together a holding tank of grace, where new life and
possibilities are realized. I help clients understand how the story of grace
can replace the story of shame in their lives.
I strive to offer professional and therapeutic help with excellent
counseling skills. I believe in the potential of each client and the hope
and promise God offers them. I believe in the power of grace and how it can
impact each life.
I approach this work from several therapeutic orientations. I utilize
Bowen’s Family Systems, narrative therapy, attachment theory, contextual
theory, emotional intelligence and play therapy. These are supported with a
solid Christian theology and intertwined with Biblical counsel.
I see myself as a fellow traveler on life’s journey of realizing the
far-reaching impact of grace in our lives. I invite you to allow me to
travel with you as you pursue the adventure of discovering grace’s impact on
your life. |
